Making a Maths Walk around Reading

We are meeting to explore the possibility of making a maths trail/walk around Reading. The plan is to split into groups, head out and investigate, return for chat/debrief/drink/food. The Trail should appeal to all age groups so we need ideas from lots of different people/teachers of different age groups. Please email Alison to register your interest.

This is a follow up to the March meeting, where we were lucky enough to hear from Garrod Musto. He told us about the maths trail that he was involved in setting up around Bath. I have attached the pdf of the booklet they produced. Reading might not be as obviously picturesque as Bath, but I am sure we will find lots to interest us, our pupils and visitors. The Institute of Mathematics and its applications (IMA) celebrates its 50th birthday in 2014, and hopes to have 50 maths trails as part of that celebration. It would be great if Meridian branch could be involved with this initiative.

Sat 16 Mar 2013 • 09:30 - 12:30 (coffee from 09:00)

Garrod Musto • Trail Blazing Maths

Hear the experiences of ATM members who teamed up with the local IMA branch in Bath to create a maths trail around the city (with the help of Dr Maths Mr Steve Humble)

Discover just how easy it is to blaze your own trail.

Take away a rich series of resources for you to have a go.

(Crop) Circle Theorems

Explore the books of Euclid’s Elements that focus on the geometry of circles.

Use the phenomenon of crop circles to demonstrate shape and measure work.

Take away a number of very useful outcomes for the classroom, and learn how to make crop circles in the playground.

Suitable for KS2 and KS3 and KS4.

Patterns, pizza and playing the guitar

Sat 12 Nov 2011 • 09:30-12:30 (coffee from 09:00)

Led by David Acheson: author of ‘1089 and All That’

Why are patterns so important? Does pizza have a place in serious mathematics? And what has all this got to do with playing the guitar? To find out, we take an off-beat look at some of the most important ideas in mathematics, and how they may be communicated at any level.

Sat 19 Mar 2011 • 09:30-12:30 (coffee from 09:00)

The ubiquitous isosceles triangle

Led by Pat Perks and Steph Prestage of the University of Birmingham.

Steph and Pat have for many years devised creative ideas aimed at bringing mathematical concepts to life in fun and active ways. This session will explore geometry with and from the isosceles triangle, guaranteed to inspire teachers in KS2-3 with ideas which can be taken straight into the classroom.

14 Nov 09 • 09:30-12:40

Developing mathematical concepts

Professor Malcolm Swan will lead interactive sessions for primary and secondary colleagues separately modelling group activities that encourage pupils to classify, define, compare, formulate and simplify. Also, there will be a ‘swap shop’ for colleagues to share their favourite ideas for classroom activities.
