Title: Islamic tilings and their symmetries

Summary -  Decorative art in the Islamic world often takes the form of geometric patterns that exhibit interesting symmetries. The talk will discuss the relationship between art and pure mathematics through the example of Frieze Patterns, essentially one-dimensional periodic patterns whose possible symmetry configurations can be fully understood. The related notions of wallpaper patterns and crystallographic patterns will also be discussed, and there will be lots of pictures.

Note: This event is suitable for Year 11 up, their teachers, and all those interested in mathematics and its applications.

Price: Free to all students and members of the LivMS; £4 door charge to others.

Title: The 2016 CHRISTMAS LECTURE: Patterns and Predictions

Presenter: Colin Wright

Time: 14:00-15:00

Summary:  This talk starts with some seductively obvious patterns that seem successfully to predict the future, but then goes on to show that not all patterns are trustworthy.

We start with simple arithmetic sequences, and talk briefly about why we claim a sequence "should" continue in a particular way. Then we look at a specific problem and look at the sequence it generates, only to discover that it's not the sequence we expect.

In an apparent shift of topic we then look at Morse Code, and look for patterns in how it's designed, and some implications. Oddly enough, both the doubling sequence (1, 2, 4, 8, 16,…) and the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ...) arise naturally.

We finish by going meta, and using a pattern of patterns to predict the existence of Juggling Patterns.

Title: Orbits: Mathematics Meets Music

Presenter - Dr Emily Howard 

Composer Emily Howard (Leverhulme Artist in Residence 2015, Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Liverpool)http://www.liv.ac.uk/mathematical-sciences/artist-in-residence/

presents her Leverhulme Trust-funded collaboration with mathematician Professor Lasse Remp-Gillen. The lecture will focus on the influence of Lasse’s mathematical research in dynamical systems on Emily’s recent musical compositions for Paris-based duo scapegoat (saxophonist Joshua Hyde and percussionist Noam Bierstone). The talk will feature video footage of musical demonstrations and performances.

In this talk I will explore the new opportunities this world of synthetic intelligence can create and what challenges it might raise.

In Tune With Mathematics

With Kevin Houston (University of Leeds) and Rob Sturman (University of Leeds)

What does it mean to be musically ‘in tune’? The story takes us from Pythagoras to the modern day. We’ll see why the standard Western tuning of instruments is in fact out of tune and we’ll see how mathematics revolutionized the music industry via software that helps singers sing in tune. Along the way we hope to solve the puzzle of the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Chord.
