Tiling Generators

Tiling Generators come in two types; squares and hexagons. There are five types of hexagon and two different types of square. Tiling Generators are an excellent resource for encouraging mathematical thinking and mathematical discussion with children of all ages.

As with all resources the introduction into the classroom is vitally important. When children first use tiling generators they need time for unrestrained experimentation. They will want to build huge designs so let them work on the floor. They will undoubtedly be proud of their work so have a camera ready to record their efforts. After a time of free exploration encourage the children to be more methodical. If a group finds that they can make letter ask them to make their names as in this design by Shane Farley. Encourage them to set themselves targets and work towards them.

All the time the children should be encouraged to think about what they are doing, to ask questions and to answer them.

The ideas in the accompanying booklet are just a starting point. What about using tiling generators in three dimensions? What about new designs of tiles. Draw them on the back of your tiles with a felt pen. What about designs mixing hexagon and square tiles?

Each type has a simple design on one face, such as when they are laid out using simple rules, many ideas for mathematical investigations can be pursued.

100 of each design in a pack.
