What, Why, How and When of Mathematics Trails

Maths trails are the mathematical version of nature trails.

A maths trail can encourage children to seek out the mathematics in their environment; introduce children to the wonder of mathematics; help children to observe their school, town or village from a different viewpoint ; encourage children to see how mathematics is used by man to interpret the world in which we live ; bring about an appreciation of the interrelationships between mathematics and nature; help children to see the relevance of mathematics outside the classroom and to appreciate its aesthetic value.

An ATM Heritage Publication

We are re-discovering out-of-print publications like this with a timeless quality and frequently requested. They are now available again as ATM Heritage publications.

This Heritage ATM publication was first published several years ago. It has much to say that is still useful in schools now. Consequently, we have made it available again as a PDF booklet.

Having made the decision to set up a maths trail, the work starts.

Writing a maths trail demands a fair amount of time but is great fun. You will be amazed at the mathematics you can find in the most seemingly boring of landscapes or buildings. In fact you may never see the place in the same light again.

This booklet will provide many useful tips and ideas for making your maths trail and involving all members of your school and your local community.
