10 Squared

At an ATM Conference we held a session using 100 carpet tiles as a substitute for a table-top 100 square and people instead of counters. The idea had developed from an activity where children and adults had become a number square by wearing numbered cardboard labels, and sitting on chairs. As a result of this session many ideas were suggested, and the first version of the poster was drafted.

An ATM Heritage Publication

We are re-discovering out-of-print publications like this with a timeless quality and frequently requested. They are now available again as ATM Heritage publications.

We decided that the ideas for using the poster should be collected together - and so 10^2 was born.

We do not suggest an age or ability range for which these games, activities, etc are suitable. We assume that you will decide with whom you can use them, and why and when. We also assume that many of the activities can be varied for use under different circumstances.

The pages are not, in general, prepared with the pupil in mind, but to give ideas to the teacher.

References to other publications are given throughout. Some of these are references which explain terms such as the Lucas number, others are references which give alternative activities on the same topic.

In the appendix we have included several versions of number squares which may be copied for use in school.

Produced by Meryl Hargreaves and Yvonne Hughes.
