Mathematical Puzzles

Pack of photocopiable puzzle cards, some numerical and some spatial.

All these puzzles except one, the Five Piece Puzzle, have a board and tiles which can be moved around on the board while the solution is being sought. There are a variety of puzzles, including some which are numerical and some which are spatial and they are arranged roughly in order of difficulty.

The puzzles may be copied onto thin card, or stuck onto card after copying. Covering or laminating will certainly extend their lives. The Five Piece Puzzle is probably best made from stiff card which can be turned over.

Some of the puzzles could be copied onto paper and pupils’ answers written or pasted onto the sheet. Some are suitable for enlarging for class or group work. Pupils are encouraged to adapt and extend these puzzles. Hints and typical solutions are given for most puzzles. There are often others!

Puzzles collected by Alwyn Spencer of Exeter and edited by Jenny Murray.
