Mathematical Activities from Poland

By Jerzy Cwirko-Godycki

Jerzy Cwirko-Godycki works at the Institute of Pedagogical Research in Warsaw and is the author of a number of mathematical story books for young children. In the early seventies he led an experimental curriculum team and some of the material in this publication originated there.

A collection of imaginative activities. Arrange dice, dominoes and cubes, play games, toss coins, investigate paths, analyse mazes. Suitable for all age groups.

Mathematical activities from Poland is ‘one’ of those ATM publications that have been around for ages and ages and still has lots of potential for generating mathematical activity in classroom across the Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4 age range.

There are over thirty ideas described and I have used many of the activities over the years. I have, also, always found this a valuable resource to offer to colleagues to provide them with ideas for their teaching.

Two of the strengths of this publication are the way activities are based upon the use of resource sheets and practical apparatus such as dominoes, dice and linking cubes. The activities themselves might be used to calm down an active lesson or brighten up a dull lesson. However, the activities can, more importantly, be woven into existing schemes of work to enrich the learning of mathematics.
