Teach A-level Maths Volume 4: Mechanics 1

How the publisher describes it:

“These presentations covers Mechanics in the A level module M1. The presentations make extensive use of diagrams to illustrate the theory and provide a perfect framework for your teaching, illustrating all the key concepts with worked examples.”

Review by Andy Kemp

In brief:

I feel that these presentations are an excellent starting point. So whilst I would choose to supplement them in some places and tailor them to my teaching in others, they are certain to be a great resource to use as the core of your Mechanics 1 teaching.

“The user can edit the presentation to their individual requirements”

Having used some of the other ‘Teach A-level Maths’ PowerPoint resources available from Chartwell Yorke, I was pleased to see that they had added a volume to cover the Mechanics 1 material.

Much like the other volumes it is made up of a series of PowerPoints, the first of which is a contents file which tells you which topics are relevant to different exam boards so it is quick and easy to tailor it to Edexcel, OCR, AQA or MEI. It maintains the slightly comic style of the previous versions, and continues to offer some printable summary slides at the end of the presentations which can be given to students, although I personally found them a little lacking in details in some places.

Whilst the colour schemes are not always to my preference they are clear and easy to read. Also being standard PowerPoints it is possible for the user to edit the presentation to their individual requirements.

The presentations all start with an interesting and colourful image to try and capture the students’ attention, whilst these images do not carry through into the presentations themselves the diagrams are clear and precise.

As someone who spent 30-40 hours writing my own PowerPoint presentations for M1 a few years ago, I feel that these presentations are an excellent starting point. So whilst I would choose to supplement them in some places and tailor them to my teaching in others, they are certain to be a great resource to use as the core of your Mechanics 1 teaching.

So whether you intend to use the presentations in class, or to make them available to students for revision either in school with a Site License, or also at home with an Extended Site Licence they are worthy of a place in any department. They would also be especially useful for staff who are not experienced A-level teachers or are teaching a particular module for the first time.

Author’s comment

I’m very aware of all kinds of lighting conditions (some very poor) and have stood at the back of many classrooms and found much published stuff is not readable to those with less than perfect eyesight. So, I’ve gone for the largest font, in bold, and cut out words where I can, in order to make everything clear even from the back of a large classroom.
