Nubble

How the publisher describes it:

“Everyone loves Nubble!, and Nubble! Express is perfect for younger pupils. Now we have developed the perfect Nubble! challenge for intermediate abilities. Nubble! 64 is designed as a stepping stone between Nubble! Express and the full game of Nubble! The Nubble! 64 board runs from hexagons 1 to 64 and the game is played with three 8-sided dice.”

In brief:

It was a huge success with both ages and abilities

“A useful vehicle for making a lesson accessible”

Nubble 64 is a computer game which exercises players command of BIDMAS. A honeycomb grid of numbers of 1-64 is presented. The board is coloured into different scoring zones. Each turn the player receives 3 randomly generated digits. These must be combined arithmetically to cover a number available on the coloured board. The aim is to fill the board and score the most points. Bonus points are available if the number you cover wins a ‘nubble’ which forms a triangle on the grid. Each number can only be covered once and so the game gradually extends the need for a more creative and confident application of BIDMAS.

I used this game for small group revision for a low ability Year 11 group and for a tuition session with an able Year 7 student. It was a huge success with both ages and abilities. They enjoyed the strategy and challenge of trying to achieve certain target numbers. The game is easily differentiated, suitable for all abilities and ages. I work with many students for whom English is not their first language and it has been a useful vehicle for making a lesson accessible to less confident speakers.

Not only does this reinforce BIDMAS operations, but the prime numbers are outlined in grey enabling interesting discussions about number properties.
