Calculating Dominoes
Calculating dominoes offers 36 different domino-based games and activities ranging from simple addition to open-ended investigations.
Following in the wake of David Fielker’s Domino Puzzles, Calculating Dominoes brings activities into the KS1 classroom too. The publication covers a wealth of calculating activities including numbers and their properties, addition and difference, doubling and multiplying as well as solving problems. In order to cover the age range (Y1 to Y5) for the recommended activities, dominoes can be ‘read’ as spot patterns, horizontal two digit numbers or vertical fractions; and many activities include open-ended investigations.
It is very easy to dip into this book to find ideas to use to reinforce concepts practically. In the classroom, activities can be managed both as a full class or in small groups. The photocopiable resource sheets are very useful too, especially the double-six and double-nine domino sets.
Having used some of the activities with both a Y2 and a Y4 class, the verdict of the children was, “Great, when can we do some more domino games?” Highly recommended.
