In brief:

Students have described this game as good and exciting! Using these cards really make youngsters think about connecting elements of mathematics, encouraging joined up thinking.

“Encouraging joined up thinking”

You can use them in a variety of ways in the classroom and I give students a varied approach allowing them to make the decision when they see the card as to whether they wish to say only the four words on the card or to say anything but the four words on the card.

One year 8 student, when given RADIUS as the word and centre, circle, diameter, distance as the fourbidden, described it as ‘from the middle to the outside’. Unfortunately his teammates failed to connect with his thinking and after 4 guesses were still way off! His efforts were not wasted though as the opposing team were ready to answer it almost immediately and with the failure of his own side, they earned a bonus point.
