Puzzles, Problems and Questions to Activate the Mind

Puzzles, Problems and Questions to Activate the Mind...

An ATM publication<< An ATM publication

This is a pack of twelve A3 posters aimed at KS2 and KS3 and based on the ATM book 'Eight Days a Week'. The posters are in two colours (blue and red). Each has a mathematical question and a simple cartoon style illustration. The questions are quite varied - some are very obvious and represent a fairly closed style of question (one asks the students to work out their weight in kilograms given that they know it in stones and pounds). Others are far more open ended (how many times do you breathe in a year) and there is a good number in between.

The big question is when would you use them - and hence are they worth purchasing? I can see value in using these for a whole class discussion - some would make a good introduction to a topic (there is a nice question that would lend itself as an introduction to simultaneous equations). There is some value in using one at a time on display in the corridor - perhaps as the ‘question of the week’ - I think my school could find them useful in this way.

The pack is priced very reasonably and so I think these are a worthy addition to any department’s resources. I’m hopeful that the ATM will regard this has the first set in a long line of such packs. Perhaps this will inspire some of us to produce our own posters?
