“These cartoons will easily lead to a rich discussion”
This is a thought provoking really great book that will encourage our students to think and discuss ideas. Each cartoon portrays a simple mathematical problem and offers a variety of responses from the cartoon people in the scene.
The variety of responses covers obvious misconceptions as well as less obvious ones and will help the students overcome difficulties and bring questions to the fore. Each cartoon also has a blank speech bubble to allow extra answers. In the way that people relate a personal problem with “my friend has this problem” approach - these cartoons enable the students to blame their errors and questions on the people in the picture - enabling them to talk more freely without embarrassment. It is possible to buy the pictures on CD, either as a single-user or a site-licence. Each cartoon has a lengthy and helpful commentary to help the teacher get the best from this rich resource. The questions are generally fairly numerical in nature - but problems in this area often underpin most mathematical problems.
These cartoons will easily lead to a rich discussion and encourage our students in their thoughts, and provide a fascinating resource for staff to use for starters and plenaries.
