AS Statistics
How the publisher describes it:
“This accessible, comprehensive textbook is designed to support any student studying AS Statistics. This book covers all three AS modules: Z1, Z2 and Z3. It has been designed especially for students with a non-mathematical background, but who nevertheless will need to understand some mathematical concepts when studying their other A levels. These students include those following Business Studies, Psychology, Geography and Biology courses. ”
Review by Peter Hall
In brief:
This is a very good book, it would make a worthy additional resource for people teaching statistics units of the regular A-level - and is a real must for those teaching the MEI AS-statistics course.
“Allows an intelligent discussion about the statistics and problems and questions”
This book is written to accompany the MEI AS Statistics course. The first module is the same as their S1 module for the “regular” AS/A-level students, but the following two modules are unique for this course and are designed for students who want the use of statistics more than the mathematical derivation of the same statistics. Each chapter starts with a fictitious report from a newspaper in order to set the statistics in context. This allows an intelligent discussion about the statistics and problems and questions.
This book is written in a friendly and easy to read style, capable students would have little trouble in teaching themselves. There are many questions to promote discussion with helpful and clearly thought out solutions in the back of the book. Similarly the answers to exercises are presented with constructive comments. Reading one of the final chapters, Correlation, shows just how well written this book is. A very clear discussion about types of data helps the reader understand the broad setting. Scatter graphs are explained carefully and the lead up to Pearson’s correlation co-efficient is handled well.
This is a very good book, it would make a worthy additional resource for people teaching statistics units of the regular A-level - and is a real must for those teaching the MEI AS-statistics course.
