Rich Task Maths 1

How the publisher describes it:

“A collection of mathematical tasks based on the successful Task Maths series. The tasks help the learner to develop and extend knowledge and understanding while working on accessible and engaging tasks.”

Review by Val Griffiths

In brief:

A really useful selection of activities to engage children in mathematical investigation, discussion and reasoning

“Great for encouraging independent investigation”

The authors say they have designed this book with ‘learners from 9-90 in mind’. Although I cannot vouch for that, it has defiantly been successful across Key Stage 2 with children of all abilities.

This book contains eight challenges which are made up of several different tasks. Some are quite short but most that I have tried can lead to several different lines of enquiry within a mixed ability classroom. The tasks within a challenge get progressively more difficult. This means that not all tasks are suitable for all children. The activities are great for encouraging independent investigation. The nature of the tasks meant that within a class there were several different directions being investigated.

Although the book does not come with answers it does come with notes, so if you have got a little confused it will point you in the correct direction. I like that the focus is not so much on the answer but on the discussion and interactive approach to getting there. The hard copy includes a free electronic copy of the book which allows for easy resource production and provides additional spreadsheet resources.

Overall, a really useful selection of activities to engage children in mathematical investigation, discussion and reasoning.
