Simple Shelters

How the publisher describes it:

“Examines basic shelters from all over the world: including timber-frame, yurts, tipis, geodesic domes.”

Review by Emma Folman

In brief:

The structures using straight sides and roofs, such as Yaranga and Chorma Dyu from Siberia warrant an opportunity to demonstrate the application of Pythagoras in real life.

“I can see the application for this within a geometry topic”

This is a lovely little book, with interesting accessible explanations about different types of shelters, images of their stages of construction and a summary of their history. I can see the application for this within a geometry topic. An opportunity to use straws to construct models of these different structures would be wonderful within our scheme of work. Time to assign this activity within the academic year will prove difficult and may need to be a July project.

The structures using straight sides and roofs, such as Yaranga and Chorma Dyu from Siberia warrant an opportunity to demonstrate the application of Pythagoras in real life.

Possibly the images in this book could become an activity linked with Autograph, attempting to recreate the structures in straight line form, or exploring planes. It’s a suggestion I’d love to hear if any one has success.
