Mathematics for Every Occasion

How the publisher describes it:

“Colin Foster’s latest book gives suggestions for interesting, rich mathematical activities on topical themes occurring throughout the year.”

Review by Emma Folman

In brief:

This book is a fantastic inspiration for rich ideas and drawing a little colour and interest into mathematics lessons.

“Packed with little snippet ideas for celebrations”

This book packed with little snippet ideas for celebrations which can be over looked but provide useful relevant and fun learning opportunities for students. I started with the holiday dates. This appeared a handy little activity, examining how the academic year is spread out across the year and alternative methods of spreading this across the calendar. I used it as an experiment with a very able year 8 group. Fascinating questions arose, the variety of answers were obtained was initially alarming but stimulated some interesting discussions, some students had included weekends, bank holidays. Students shared information about school dates and hours from other cultures within their own knowledge, prompting the opportunity for comparison.

I have always felt my department should celebrate Pi day within the scheme of work. This book has some lovely ideas and I shall be developing the ideas to work so that they are appropriate for my students.

This book is a fantastic inspiration for rich ideas and drawing a little colour and interest into mathematics lessons.
