Teaching Mathematics in the Primary School was written by members of the primary mathematics team at Canterbury Christ Church University College and focuses on both the teaching of mathematics content as well as on interpreting current educational theories in ways that are directly applicable to the classroom.
This book is broken into several main sections covering not only mathematics as a subject area and ways of enhancing the teaching and learning of mathematics, but also effective selection and use of resources, assessment and planning, and special needs issues. The final section of the book addresses the role of school mathematics coordinator. Each section draws on educational research and also gives concrete examples from teachers and pupils. The sections each end with a summary, a set of reflective questions and a list of references and further reading.
Though written mainly as a textbook for teacher-trainees, this book is extremely readable and would make an excellent addition to any school's professional library. It could also be a good resource for anyone planning and leading staff development activities. The material covered is comprehensive and clearly illustrates how to implement ideas on a practical level. I found myself taking a number of notes on interesting points throughout the book. I would highly recommend this book as one that provides a very clear look at how the various aspects of primary mathematics education, including teaching, learning, managing, planning, and assessing are all connected.
