Maths in Stories

How the publisher describes it:

“Young children are just enthralled by stories and picture books; they love both old favourites and modern tales. This book shows you how to use stories to help children develop their understanding in maths. Provides contexts for problem solving and numeracy skills.”

Review by Val Griffiths

In brief:

A useful book to start your understanding and passion for using picture books in maths.

“My Foundation Stage colleagues are gathering the suggested books to begin their planning process for the coming term”

Many people only view picture or story books as resources for Literacy — but they are just as valuable for developing mathematical thinking too. This book makes suggestions about suitable texts, both those with obvious maths and some you might not have considered. As with any resource, the book makes it clear, that books will only be powerful in supporting maths if supported by good forward planning. The book makes suggestions about how the book could be used to theme all areas of learning to really engage the pupils.

Each suggested text is accompanied by ideas on how to use it in maths, with key areas of learning and vocabulary highlighted for you. This would be an ideal starting point for those not experienced with using stories in maths — it was especially appreciate by support staff who loved the key questions provided, helping them to help the children make the most of the learning experience.

Designed for, and aimed, at Early Years and Key Stage 1 this book has also helped me consider the use of picture books in Key Stage 2 maths. The list of book suggestions alone has been worth while, and I know my Foundation Stage colleagues are gathering the suggested books to begin their planning process for the coming term.
