Supporting Mathematical Thinking
How the publisher describes it:
“This book celebrates the work done by subject specialists in mainstream classrooms to promote inclusive practice. It describes new and creative ways of developing mathematical thinking among pupils. Each chapter demonstrates reflective minds at work, close observation of learners, willingness to understand the students’ thinking process and patient commitment to students over long periods of time.”
Review by Steve Bishop
In brief:
The book had its origins in papers published in the journal Support for Learning (February 2001) and have been updated for republication. It would be a shame if this book remained solely in the hands of SENCOs.
“They all write in an engaging and accessible way”
The approach to special educational needs’ (SEN) has shifted in the last few decades. Twenty-five years ago it was the students that had the problems, now rightly, it is the subjects that have their own SEN. This 154 page, A4 book examines the SEN of mathematics. The fifteen contributors bring with them a wealth of expertise and knowledge; they all write in an engaging and accessible way.
The book seeks to celebrate the ability of those who have worked to promote inclusive approaches, and there is much insight here for those involved in more mainstream education.
There are two introductory chapters and the remainder of the book is split into three sections: individuals; possibilities; and looking forward.
Topics covered include: a pilot numeracy recovery scheme; Pythagoras' theorem, the use of Logo; written calculation strategies for division; the use of graphic calculators; learning support assistants in the primary classroom; and inclusion and entitlement.
The book had its origins in papers published in the journal Support for Learning (February 2001) and have been updated for republication. It would be a shame if this book remained solely in the hands of SENCOs.
