A publication of challenges to solve designed to extend thinking for mathematicians aged 11 years and upwards. Divided into six areas including visualising shapes, playing with numbers and making tables, each challenge is followed by guidance to its solution.
As well as posing the challenge, most sections also offer information around the problem, which makes for an interesting read. The writing style would certainly appeal to pupils in Y6 and the early years of secondary school: ‘the milk crate problem’ starts by informing the reader that in years to come they will know this as ‘the beer crate problem’!
However, I had great difficulty dealing with the font used for all the titles which makes the words appear as though they have been left out in the rain and have peeled away as well as the choice of various shades of pink as the main colour for all the splendid illustrations.
The problems are interesting and accessible at different levels. If you can cope with pink, it is a good buy.
