Review by Ros Hyde
In brief:
Thoughtful practitioners at both primary and secondary levels will really appreciate this book.
“The activities promote an active and kinaesthetic approach”
This book is mainly aimed at primary school teachers but would also be of use to secondary school teachers.
The first part of the book contains practical advice and lots of activities across the National Curriculum Attainment Targets. ATM members will enjoy and appreciate the kinds of activities and approaches described in the book. Short sections also explain how children learn mathematics in an easy and accessible way. The activities promote an active and kinaesthetic approach to the learning of mathematics.
The second part of the booked has the title ‘Developing Interactive Teaching Strategies’. This section of the book is important and definitely worth reading. There is a lot of practical and thoughtful advice for teachers in promoting children’s mathematics thinking. There are particularly good sections on differentiation and on questioning and I particularly liked the section on the qualities of successful learner.
Thoughtful practitioners at both primary and secondary levels will really appreciate this book.
