Your guide to the Forum: Talk, Share, Discuss

Getting started at the Forum

The ATM community section of the website leads to our Twitter and Facebook pages as well as the ATM Forum where you can talk, share and discuss mathematics teaching topics.

The ATM Forum is categorised into various overall topic areas called ‘boards’. We have boards for ATM Matters, MT Journal, Primary, Secondary and more. There is a specail board called ‘Playground’ where you can experiment and play sending messages - for those that are unfamiliar with the forum concept.

If you are not already a forum user, you will need to register. Set up your username, your displayed name and email address.

You will receive an email to the email address with which you registered. This is to confirm you are the controller of that email address. Once you confirm using the link in the email, you will receive a password in another email. You can change this password and other details later (see next section).

Now you have a username and a password, you can log in to start new topics or to reply to existing topics started by other people.

Now you can use the ‘Playground’ board to try out the system. Messages posted here behave in the same way as ‘proper’ messages but allows you to experiment and get used to the system.

Click on the start new topic link and you will see a form that looks just like the sort of form you use to compose an email. Enter a subject and your text.

You can preview your message before ‘posting’ it. Once you have confirmed you want to post your message it will appear on the board for everyone to see.

You can reply to other people’s messages in the same way. You can add formatting tweaks to your messages as well.

Changing your password, settings and getting email notifications

To change your settings on the Forum simply log in and you will then be able to access your User Control Panel (User CP).

The User Control Panel is where you can see personal messages, change your password and manage email notifications of message on whole boards or individual topics.

Personal messages are sent within the Forum either from other forum users or from the administrator. You can have a notification of their existence sent to you at your email address.

You can view and edit your profile to change your individual settings: email address, password and notifications in particular.

To change your password simply enter the new password in both boxes.

To allow the forum to send you emails about notifications you need first to set the global notifications setting to ‘yes’.

You can see the full video for this ‘How-To’ at atm.org.uk/resources/how-tos.html

You can set email notifications for whole boards: either only new topics or for both new topics and all replies.

You can view all the notifications you have set in one place, once you have started setting them up for boards and individual topics.

Finally, if you have lost your password you can have a link sent to your email address. This link will allow you to set a new password.
