The Association of Teachers of Mathematics believes in providing teachers with the resources to help them develop their mathematics teaching in creative and broad-thinking ways. The ultimate aim being to develop a creative and thinking approach in mathematics learners.
ATM publishes a wide range of resources and materials. They all have one thing in common: they are written by teachers for teachers and for learners.
Just one of the ways we support these aims is to provide FREE resources on our website for teachers to download or use online in the classroom.
Gaps and Misconceptions Diagnostic and Teaching Tool
The Gaps and Misconceptions Tool is an interactive, web-based diagnostic tool to support teachers in dealing with children’s gaps and misconceptions in maths.
This tool was written and created by the Devon Primary Maths Team (part of Devon Learning and Development Partnership) and is made available, with thanks, on the ATM website.
The Gaps and Misconceptions Tool deals with three key areas that the QCA regularly reports are areas of weakness exhibited by KS1 and KS2 children in end of KS SATs and optional QCA tests: subtraction, division and FDPRP (fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion). The Gaps and Misconceptions Tool includes guidance papers on what makes these areas difficult to teach.
The Gaps and Misconceptions Tool links objectives related to the three areas to appropriate probing questions to support diagnosis of specific misconceptions or gaps. These, in turn, are linked to teaching images to address the difficulties that children are encountering.

A gradually building series of instructional and useful guides for using equipment, websites (including the ATM website) to make life just that little bit easier for busy teachers.

Friezes by Bob Burn
This booklet on friezes is the second on symmetry in the plane. The first being "Sorting by symmetry, patterns with a centre".
The learning idea is to look at and make figures, notice what they have in common and argue about it.
