ATM • A New Logo
In true ATM style an invitation is extended to all members - individual or institutional, to design a suitable logo that symbolizes our association.
Why is ATM considering a new logo?
Now that education finds itself adapting more and more against a corporate backdrop, ATM needs to be readily identifiable. Teachers and others in education need to be reminded of who we are and what we represent. More importantly they need to recognise how we differ from others and what makes the association unique.
A logo is an integral part of a company’s identity in the market place. It is what we project to teachers and others in the field of educational endeavour. As such it is our signature; it should represent what it is we do as an association and what we stand for.
Our logo should be synonymous with what we are saying as an association and what we are trying to achieve within the teaching of mathematics. It should be evident on our stationary, advertisements, signs and presentations that are used or made by us.
Our members need to identify with who we are and what we do. Teachers, lecturers, advisers and others new to the profession need to have a lasting image of our benchmarked quality within mathematics education.
We are developing e-aspects of our work and need to develop a logo that works with both printed and electronic format. The intention is that next year one journal will be in and interactive e-format.
The logo should give our association a first glimpse of our professional intent as we begin to compete in the emerging new world of competitive education and our quest for recognition and survival. By necessity in this web based, e-nvironment a logo needs to have both static and dynamic elements to it. So why not involve your students and pupils, perhaps other departments in its design.
Ideally this logo needs to be available as camera ready art with professional formatting or as an idea that a designer could work up for us. We must provide for every need be it print, web or electronic.

History
A brief history of the ATM’s branding can be seen here.
Notes
Any design would need to be represented both in colour and in monotone.
Any design would need to work along sides subsidiary branding such as for the distinctive labelling of different areas of the website.
A logo should be readily adaptable to stationery such as letterheads, small self-adhesive labels, the spines of CDs.
A logo should avoid costly reworking for different formats of use (tall and narrow, short and wide, large exhibition graphics).
There will be instances where animation may be appropriate for the logo without distracting from the overall corporate identity.
Have a look at the brief history to get an idea of the ways in which the logo has been used.
Submission format
Ideas may be submitted in jpg, gif or png static graphics formats. Flash video may be used either as a format for the logo itself in animated situations or for the presentation of your ideas. Ideas will exhibited on the website for consideration, so any simple, standard web format is probably acceptable. You are advised to contact the Web Editor to confirm any details if you have doubts.
The deadline for submitting designs is Jul 19 2008. Please send your designs to webeditor@atm-online.org.uk.
It is anticpated that the new logo will begin its life in January 2009.
Important - Very Important
ATM is offering this as a design opportunity. We are unable to pay for any work done by you in preparing and submitting designs. By submitting a design you are assigning, to ATM, the copyright and the right to use the design in any form or medium in perpetuity. We are unable to offer a fee for present or future use of a design.
Ideas submitted may be used in their entirety or may be used as a basis for further graphic development or simply as inspiration for development.
Where a final design is based on an idea, the creator(s) of that idea will be acknowledged on the website and in the ATM journal. Such acknowledgements may be quoted in the creator(s) portfolio.
Let us repeat, we are seeking good will ideas, to be donated free of charge and free of encumbrance, for ATM’s exclusive use.
