The e-newsletter from the Association of Teachers of Mathematics

You have asked to receive this enews – it isn’t spam. See the bottom of this enews for how to remove your address from the list.

It's been a long time...

I apologise for not having sent you an eNews for some months. I intend, from now on, to be sending them regularly, at least once a month, perhaps once a fortnight.

Why has it been so long? We have been moving the website to a new server which involved a myriad of technical changes to ensure that all the fancy bits like the BuyOnLine system, the Forum and many nuts and bolts things continued to work as intended.

At the same time we have added a number of exciting things and useful things to the site. There will be another eNews during the next week covering the usual stuff but for this eNews I wanted to draw your attention to our changes and additions.

Mathematics Education Events Calendar

We have done a little 'mash-up' (that's a geeky term for combining data and programmes from different sources) with Google Calendars and we now have an ATM Mathematics Events Calendar.

You can see it here: http://www.atm.org.uk/calendar/

Events in blue have been entered on the calendar from our system. Events in red are fed in from Another calendar edited in Oslo and covers mathematics education research conferences. We have also included UK public holidays.

Click the link at the top of the page to submit an event to be added to the calendar.

Have you looked at the page yet? Did you scroll down to the bottom of the page? This is where the 'mash-up' gets really fun - all the events from the calendar (provided they were submitted with Google friendly addresses) are plotted on the Google map.

So not only can you find an event by date, but you can find an event - a course or conference for example - near you.

You can add an event to the Calendar here: http://www.atm.org.uk/calendar/submit.html

Have Your Say

We have a new section as a complement to the Forum. On specific issues we invite you to add your comments: Have Your Say. The topic will change as new issues arise.

At the moment we are inviting you to have your say on The Williams Review Report.

You can go straight there: http://www.atm.org.uk/your-say/williams-your-say.html

The Forum

The Forum itself is not new, but it has recently been upgraded and together with the move to a new server it should be much more robust and less prone to messages getting lost.

We have also integrated it much more into other areas of the website. For example, certain article in the Mathematics Teaching section have direct links to discussions about those articles in the Forum.

Many of the products in BuyOnLine will soon have direct links to their own discussion areas in the Forum as well.

There are two new areas in the Forum: Primary and Secondary which will allow discussions to focus on each of those areas of mathematics learning and teaching.

http://www.atm.org.uk/forum/board=primary will take you to the Primary board.

http://www.atm.org.uk/forum/board=secondary will take you to the Secondary board.

Why not contribute now?

And don't forget there is the playground: http://www.atm.org.uk/forum/board=test

In the Playground you can, without having to be registered, experiment with looking at, sending and replying to messages. So you can get used to the system of you are unfamiliar with Forums.

Anyone can register to contribute to the Forum boards. Your username and password are up to you and are not the same as the username and password for the members' only sections of the website - although there is nothing to stop you registering in the Forum using the same username and password if you wish.

Registration is needed as a security measure to prevent spammers swamping the message boards with there unsavoury messages and links.

And if you go to News Central (http://www.atm.org.uk/news/) you can pick up the latest messages in the Forum at the same time as checking the ATM website news and the Calendar.

News Central

ATM News Central allows you to check the Events Calendar, the ATM Noticeboard, ATM Website News, Have Your Say, the Forum and the Web Editor's Blog all in one place.

You can go straight there: http://www.atm.org.uk/news/

RSS News Feeds

The News Central page makes use of what are called RSS news feeds. Basically the text from the relevant page is automatically extracted and converted to a standard format which can be read by 'RSS News Readers or Aggregators'.

This can be as simple as adding the URL for the News Feed as bookmark in your browser, you can add it your personalised Google home page if you have one, or you can be even more sophisticated and install a news reader as a separate program on your computer. I, for example, can check all the news feeds using my mobile phone - so no matter where I am I can check what someone may have added to the Forum about a topic.

On the News Central page is a link to the BBC website with more about RSS and how you an use it.

ATM Speakers and Representatives

If you are a member of ATM you might like to ask us if you could be added to this section. This where press and media will be directed to find people who can comment on, reply to and generally expound on aspects of mathematics teaching and learning.

Obviously, since this would imply ATM endorsement and ATM representation, your inclusion on the list would have to be approved by the General Council. But feel free to email the webeditor@atm-online.org.uk to suggest yourself.

It is hoped that this will allow ATM to promote itself and its philosophy in relation to current topical matters and items of interest in the media.

Boris - The Gaps and Misconceptions Tool

The good people at Devon Education Services spent along time devising questions and techniques to help primary teachers establish the gaps and misconceptions based on the results of standardised tests.

It goes further than that, however, with a simple and straightforward set of 'images' and techniques that will help the teacher address those gaps and misconceptions with individuals, groups or classes.

It has proved invaluable for Devon teachers and we are delighted to have been asked to host it on our website thus providing access for everyone.

Go there and have look: http://www.atm.org.uk/boris/

Reviews

Reviews of books, equipment, software and websites is a popular area of the website and we have developed a system to broaden the range of things reviewed.

Go here: http://www.atm.org.uk/reviews/review-requests.html to find a list of items awaiting review. If you would like to review any of those items (and there is a backlog that we are going to add shortly) then use the form to let us know. Usually you will get to kep the reviewed item whether your review is praising or damning.

If you have something that you want to be reviewed, then this is the place you need: http://www.atm.org.uk/reviews/request.html

If you have written a review then you can submit it here: http://www.atm.org.uk/reviews/submit.html
