Did you know? ====================================================================== Hello Again ----------- It's been a while since I sent out an eNews - I've been concentrating on a number of developments on the website - some have taken longer than I had anticipated and hoped. I thought it would be the right time to bring you up to date before moving on to the next stage(s). Read on to find out where I've go to and where we are going. ====================================================================== Website Personal Members' Only ------------------------------ I struggled long and hard trying to get this section of the site working the way I wanted it to work. I didn't want to greet everyone with a 'You Must Log In to View this Website' message. So whether or not you are a member you can wander round the site anywhere until you get to a page or a resource that we want to be available only to members. It is only when a visitor gets to one of these that they need to prove they are a Personal Member of ATM. For example when you go to the MT Journals page, you can view everything that is available (MT articles, in this case). Some are available for anyone to read (marked with an A icon) - and these can be read just by clicking as you would expect. If, however, it is an article marked for Personal Members Only (an M icon), the visitor is asked to enter their username and password. The really clever bit - even if I do say so myself - is that when faced with a complete page that is restricted to Personal Members Only, I can provide an edited version for non-members but the full version for Members. All members for whom we have a current and working email address have been emailed with their username and password. Again, I have tried to draw a balance between security and ease of use. I am not going to go into detail here, but if you are a member and you have received your details - I think you will appreciate what I mean. Let me know if anything doesn't seem to be working as you would expect - email webeditor@atm-online.org.uk ====================================================================== ATM BuyOnLine Payments ---------------------- We have also introduced secure online card payment facilities in the BuyOnLine section of the website. This has reduced the administrative burden on the office as well as allowing a number of other developments. We can now offer instant access to the Personal Members Only items of the website. We can start producing e-publications that are available to purchase as an instant download. We can now offer e-Membership - more details see below. ====================================================================== e-Membership ------------ We have introduced a new category of membership available to Full Personal Members (this we hope will expand to include other categories of membership later in 2007). e-Membership provides all the benefits of being a member of ATM including full access to the Personal Members Only items on the website. The only difference is that these members are able to contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of the ATM by not receiving a printed paper Journal. Instead you simply read it online. Saves ATM money, reduces tree usage - all round benefits. ====================================================================== ATM Forums ---------- The old ATM Mail List provided, theoretically, a means by which mathematics educators could ask about and discuss matters of common interest. In practice, it wasn't frequently used and a very high proportion of apparent members were in fact no longer members - the email addresses they had registered were 'dead'. We have replaced this with a new much more flexible online Discussion Forum. Anyone can register to talk, discuss, share information and ideas. ATM Members have access to Members Only discussion areas. To register just go to: http://www.atm.org.uk/forum/ The main discussion board at the moment is for General Maths Education topics but I will split this into interest areas as and when necessary. For security reasons the username and password will be different from that which allows access to the ATM website Personal Members Only area. ====================================================================== Still to come... ---------------- More back numbers of Mathematics Teaching journal made available on the website More free (to Members) resources available 'L' a Mathemagical Adventure should be available by Easter 2007 Grid Algebra and Grid Number available in the first half of 2007 An even more improved and useful BuyOnLine system. ====================================================================== Did You Know? ------------- Did you know that the ATM BuyOnLine system allows you to start your order on one computer (say at school), then email it to your home machine (to continue there), then email to a colleague for them to add things, then email it again to the School Office to pay for it? If you did...well done. If you didn't - then you do now! ====================================================================== To unsubscribe from this e-News email: enews@atm-online.org.uk with the word 'remove' in the subject box of the email (NOT in the message area but in the SUBJECT box please. ====================================================================== If you have any problems email direct to the Web Editor: webeditor@atm-online.org.uk Association of Teachers of Mathematics 7 Prime Industrial Park Shaftesbury Street Derby DE23 8YB +44 (0) 1332 346599 ====================================================================== The ATM eNews is handled by Annery Kiln Web Design and Management: www.annerykiln.co.uk - Delivering Your Information Effectively +44 (0) 1237 477605 ======================================================================
