After much discussion with the IT support people at the College - I hope to do a number of things. The opening address is being digitally recorded and I intend to make it available on the website for everyone to hear from Tuesday late afternoon or evening. And, if we can fight our way through the firewall I hope we will have a conference webcam set up so you can see what nefarious things people get up to at an ATM conference. This blog will be being updated as often as I can. So check out http://www.atm.org.uk/conferences/conf2006.html which will have the links to the various bits and peices. Oh, we hope to be adding an online gallery of pictures of the day as well. ====================================================================== Project Officer - Operational Research Society funded research... ----------------------------------------------------------------- This is a one year project funded by the Operational Research Society. The aim is to promote the understanding and use of Operational Research in Schools and Colleges of Further Education. The person appointed would be required to devote at least the equivalent of one day a week for a period of up to a year. Funds are available to pay for a partial secondment from an existing job. This post would suit a current or future mathematics teacher who has or is likely to have responsibility for delivering Decision Mathematics modules as part of a GCE "A" level course The person appointed would work in association with colleagues based at the Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education (RSS CSE). This is based at Nottingham Trent University and it would be advantageous if the person lived within commuting distance of Nottingham. Depending on the direction of the project, collaboration with the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics may also be included as part of the project. It is possible that the successful candidate will be required to work with children during the course of this project. Thus Criminal Records Bureau clearance would be required. For an informal discussion about this post, please contact Stuart Johns on (0114) 225 3136, or s.l.johns@shu.ac.uk. The closing date for applications is Fri 05 May 2006. Applicants should send a curriculum vitae including current salary details plus covering letter via email ONLY to miles@orsoc.org.uk Bob Miles, Secretary and General Manager, Operational Research Society. ====================================================================== Review of the Requirements for Initial Teacher Training ------------------------------------------------------- A public consultation on the requirements for initial teacher training (ITT) will begin in April 2006. This is complementary to the TDA's consultation on the standards for the award of qualified teacher status (QTS) and for classroom teachers. It is important for us to seek the views of our stakeholders so that the requirements for ITT are fit for purpose, reflect new standards, and continue to contribute to the provision of high-quality teacher training. Between 24 April and 14 July, you will be able to respond to the consultation online at: www.tda.gov.uk/requirementsreview. In May and June, TDA will also host a series of consultation events. If you wish to receive further details of these, please contact Laura Mahoney on 020 7023 8182 or laura.mahoney@tda.gov.uk by Fri 14 Apr 2006. ====================================================================== Teachers wanted to evaluate National Strategies... -------------------------------------------------- Are you a teacher or practitioner in a school or early years setting in England? If so, we would like your help. The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) has been commissioned to evaluate the National Primary and Secondary Strategies over a period of five years. We are inviting teachers/practitioners, middle leaders and senior leaders across the primary and secondary phases, including early years settings, to join our stakeholder panel. Panel members will be asked to complete an online survey twice a year and in recognition of their contribution will be provided with feedback on the findings of the evaluation surveys and access to a dedicated webpage. To have your say on the National Strategies and find out more, please email stakeholderpanel@nfer.ac.uk with your name and contact details, including your current role and the phase in which you work. Today it is used in almost all Dutch schools – in international comparisons, Dutch pupils significantly outscore their English counterparts. Since 1990, Dutch researchers have worked with colleagues in the USA to produce “Maths in Context,” essentially an English language version of RME. This is currently being trialled in 12 Manchester schools and from September 2006 the trial will be extended to other UK schools via four additional universities. This two day conference will consider the practical implementation of RME, issues of curriculum research and design, and the impact to date on pupils and teachers of the trials in Manchester. The conference will allow you to meet the teachers, pupils and university tutors involved in the project in the Greater Manchester area and provide you with a range of practical ideas supporting the development of an effective approach to teaching that incorporates problem solving and realistic situations in the everyday teaching of mathematics. More details on their website: http://s13a.math.aca.mmu.ac.uk/DMtC/Conference/ConfDetailsSch.html ====================================================================== Open call for two new ACME members... ------------------------------------- The Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME) provides a two- way channel between the mathematics community and the Government and its agencies on mathematics education issues in English schools and colleges. ACME is seeking two new members, one from the 11-19 sector (with experience of 14-19 teaching, especially GCSE and A-Level Mathematics) and one from a university mathematics department. Short- listed candidates for the positions are expected to have extensive experience of teaching. Recognising the need to accommodate any time- tabling arrangements, we will be flexible about start dates; the new members may start serving on ACME from the 1st of any month between September 2006 and January 2007 - applicants should indicate their preferred start date. Members are currently expected to give 15% of their time to ACME work, and their employers will be reimbursed for the relevant proportion of their salary costs via the Royal Society. Travel and subsistence expenses incurred on ACME business (including for its formal meetings, usually held monthly in London) are reimbursed directly to members. Members are selected partly by reference to the overall balance of the committee, and partly on the basis of criteria recommended by the mathematics community including: willingness to serve on ACME and ability to commit the necessary time to ACME work; broad expertise and recognised status; involvement in established networks (such as membership of professional bodies) to allow wide consultation and dissemination; track record in writing, leading projects, and communicating to diverse audiences; and open-mindedness and the ability to work as part of a co-operative team. The members of ACME will serve as individuals and not as representatives of any organisation or interest group. They will have sufficient stature within the community that their views carry weight. More details on the ACME website: http://www.royalsoc.ac.uk/acme/ Applications must be received by Wed 12 Apr 2006. ====================================================================== Mr Numbervator - maths on the road... ------------------------------------- Mr Numbervator is a character invented and designed to teach maths in the hands on friendly interactive way.
