She was a gifted mathematician and an exciting teacher ... the most creative of thinkers and her contribution of ideas to the teaching of mathematics ... her interests and willingness to engage with new ideas led her down many interesting and unexpected paths. She leaves a husband, Dick, three married daughters, several grandchildren and many thousands of people whose lives have been touched for the better. You can read all of the tributes to Gill Hatch here: http://www.atm.org.uk/people/gill-hatch.html ====================================================================== BETT 2006 --------- 11-14 Jan 2006, Olympia, London Meet ATM's Professional Officer on the new Subject Association Advice Centre. ATM will be there throughout the show in order to: - demonstrate to you how ATM's range of software can be used in primary and secondary classrooms; - show you some of our new software under development; - discuss how you can make use of the free resources on the Integrating ICT in the mathematics classroom CD-ROM which was sent to all secondary schools in October - help you choose appropriate mathematics software for your school - talk to you about how ICT can be embedded into schemes of work - explain how ATM can provide ICT training events to suit the needs of your school. In order to be sure of your opportunity to get free ICT advice from ATM, visit http://www.bettshow.com now to book an appointment with the Subject Association Advice Centre at a time to suit you. Don't miss this special event at the BETT show! ATM Seminar at BETT 2006 ------------------------ Friday 13 January 11.00 "Using ICT to promote discussion and problem solving in mathematics" Barbara Ball's seminar explores interactive ways of working with ICT in KS2 and KS3 classrooms. Choosing the right software is only the first step - you then have to ask pupils the right questions when you work with the whole class. There will be examples of activities which encourage whole-class discussion and which challenge pupils to solve mathematical problems. Visit the seminars page at http://www.bettshow.com now to book a place for this seminar. ====================================================================== Grid Algebra Software Development --------------------------------- The Association of Teacher of Mathematics (ATM) would like to receive expressions of interest from experienced freelance programmers interested in developing software previously known as Grid Algebra with a team of teaching colleagues. This is likely to involve significant expertise in Flash, C++ or similar. Payment for this role will be £10 000 over the project lifetime, assumed to be a year, including technical development and technical support for the first year of the program's life, once the software goes on sale. Shortlisting will take place on 04 Jan 2006. Please contact Karen Moran karenmoran@atm.org.uk in the ATM Office for further details of the software and the application procedure. ====================================================================== Mathematics and Identity ------------------------ Invitation to join a seminar series on mathematics and identity A new seminar series on mathematics and identity will run in 2006-7 in London and Manchester. We want to have teachers as well as researchers at the seminars and plan to provide money for supply cover for the days involved. If you are interested then you can get more information from the website below: http://ioewebserver.ioe.ac.uk/ioe/cms/get.asp?cid=4381&4381_0=12442 Laura Black, Heather Mendick, Margaret Brown, Melissa Rodd and Yvette Solomon (maths_and_identity@yahoogroups.com) ====================================================================== CAME 2005 - The Fourth CAME Symposium ------------------------------------- Shaping Research and Development of Computer Algebra in Mathematics Education will be held October 19-20, 2005 in Roanoke, Virginia USA in conjunction with the PME-NA-27 (http://www.pmena.org/2005) conference, October 20-23 2006 CAME was originally founded at ICME-8 in Seville in July 1996. CAME's goals are: - to facilitate the dissemination and exchange of information on research and development in the use of computer algebra in mathematics education; - to facilitate access to international expertise in the use of computer algebra in mathematics education; - to promote the study of the use of computer algebra in mathematics education. CAME's principle activity is a two-yearly Symposium: the first was in Israel, 1999; the second in The Netherlands, 2001; and the third in Reims, France, June 2003. CAME 2005 - The Fourth CAME Symposium website is: http://www.lonklab.ac.uk/came/events/CAME4/index.html ====================================================================== Teachers' TV ------------ Teachers' TV are pleased to announce the launch of Teachers' TV Associates, which is a great way for people working in schools in England to get closer to Teachers' TV and help spread the word about the great range of useful programmes the channel offers.
