Primary Subjects Magazine

Primary Subjects is a unique joint project bringing together the expertise and experience of the subject associations, one of the first initiated by the newly formed Council for Subject Associations.

Specialist secondary teachers, who usually teach in only one curriculum area, are often very familiar with subject associations and depend on them for advice, support, resources, CPD, and to lobby on behalf of their subject, with policy makers and other bodies. But many primary teachers are often unaware of the wealth of support available from associations like the Association of Teachers of Mathematics.

Who is Primary Subjects for?

If you are the Headteacher, it is not primarily for you! The format has been designed to be separated, shared with subject leaders, and copied.

Primary Subjects is written with subject leaders particularly in mind – those who are expected to be the advocates for, and source of specialist information about, that subject within school. But the activities will, we hope, be of use to other teachers interested in understanding and implementing current and future curriculum developments.

Who are the contributors?

The subject associations represent all of the different primary curriculum areas. The authors are teachers, advisers, researchers, all known for their experience and understanding of teaching and learning in primary classrooms and their expertise in the subject.

So why Primary Subjects?

It’s an interesting time for primary education. We’ve had the recently revised frameworks in literacy and numeracy, the Dearing recommendations on Primary Languages, and the announcement of pilot programmes providing 5 hours of culture per week. All of these fit within the Children’s Plan and the Every Child Matters agenda, but it’s sometimes difficult to see how they are realised in the classroom.

Each author (or group of authors) has taken a slightly different stance - some articles take a practical approach and describe activities easily replicated in your own classroom, whilst others are more philosophical in nature.

Here you can find the contribution to Primary Subjects from the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) and MA.
