Mathematics Teaching 205

Mathematics Teaching is the journal of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics. It is a professional journal sent to all members of the Association.

ATM is seeking new editors for ‘MT incorporating Micromath’

The role of MT Editors becomes vacant at the end of 2008, at the end of the term of service of the current team. The current editors have led the journal through significant change in recent years and believe now is time for new editorship. We owe much to the vision and hard work of the current team.

ATM seeks expressions of interest from teams, and from individuals willing to consider joining a team, to tender for this paid role.

We seek to appoint a new team by May 2008 in order to enable the new editors to learn from the experience of the outgoing team by shadowing them as they prepare their final issue. The new editors will take full responsibility in Autumn 2008, handing over first copy at the beginning of November 2008 for the first issue of 2009.

The successful candidate(s) will have a vision for the future of ‘Mathematics Teaching incorporating Micromath’, taking into consideration the possibility of e-journals.

Interviews will take place after the ATM Easter 2008 conference and those invited to tender will have an opportunity to meet current editors at the conference at Keele University.

Interested individuals and teams are encouraged to make contact with the ATM office in the first instance. They will be sent a detailed briefing and encouraged to ask any questions by phone or email. They will be invited to submit by end February a CV and a vision statement for the ATM journals and e-journals.

It is not a refereed journal. Submissions are reviewed by the editorial team of three, and many are initially accepted as they are or with minor modifications. Some are rejected completely, sometimes with a suggestion of another publication that might be more suitable, and others are returned to the author with ideas about modifying the article with a view to resubmission.

Many articles have additional information or associated files placed on the journal website. Most articles received eventually make it to publication, though sometimes considerable editing or re-writing takes place.

Mathematics Teaching welcomes summaries of research presented in a suitable form for a wider audience.

Mathematics Teaching with Micromaths

We are about to begin a process of appointing new journal editors for 2009 we thought it was the correct time to consult with our members and non-members via our web-site and forum.

The change of editors gives us a chance to think in new and radical ways about what we what the journals to be. One thought from the outgoing editors is that some of the issues should be in an interactive web-format, not just a pdf document and could alternate with paper copies. This would allow the exploration of all sorts of software as you were reading accounts of their use.

We are keen to hear views from members who perhaps are comfortable with the current format but can see improvements that could be made and also non-members who might tell us what would entice them to join ATM. What they would want to see in a journal that would encourage then to participate in the ATM group of teachers and educationalists?

To make your views known go to this ATM forum topic and add your views, ideas and comments.
