Welcome - George Knights
A welcome from George Knights, Honorary Secretary of ATM to this new ATM initiative and from Janus Halkier Hansen, Editor of Denmark’s Matematiklaererforening.
Editorial - Douglas Butler and Lyndon Baker
A few words from MTi’s new editors, Douglas Butler and Lyndon Baker, written shortly before the launch on 1st July 2009.
Opening Salvos - John Mason and Anne Watson, David Fielker, Sam Costello
Looking back, looking forwards and taking stock. A pot pourri of thoughts, insights and opinions from four senior members of ATM who can be found reflecting about secondary school mathematics in five years time, how technology is impacting on the mathematics classroom and how in the past ATM has been supportive to a career in mathematics teaching.
It’s ‘Parabola’ - Douglas Butler
Just how many questions can you ask to which the answer is “It’s a parabola!”? Douglas Butler suggests a few. Follow the links and you may be surprised. Alternatively you could pose some other questions that give wider access to the parabola.
Spring Scales in KS1 - Helen Williams
What is weight? What is the easiest way to compare the weight of two or more differing objects? Or do they mean mass? investigates.
RISP 01 - Jonny Griffiths
What are RISPs? They are certainly firm favourites according to readers of Mathematics Teaching. Follow the link and see a very useful rich starter, from the RISP creator Jonny Griffiths.
Trigonometry with Year 8: Part 2 - Jessica Steer, Maria Antioneta de Vila and James Eaton
In MT214 Steer et al outlined some work they had undertaken introducing Trigonometry to year 8 pupils. The first lesson they had used was introduced at the end of the article. What follows is the sequence of teaching that they undertook and in MT 215 they will be evaluating the work that they undertook using Geometer’s Sketchpad.
Maths Champions - Mike Ollerton
See how a group of determined and enthusiastic group of trainees, led by Mike Ollerton, are becoming more and more involved in developing teaching skills for subsequent use in primary schools.
Being a Number - Mike Ollerton
Mike Ollerton gives you a game that encapsulates the very spirit of ATM – it is adaptable, offering many rich opportunities for extension that uses the simplest of resources – pieces of card to engage children and trainees alike in understanding more about number.
Overnight Solution - Barbara Ball and Derek Ball
How often have you gone to bed thinking of a mathematics problem whose solution has eluded you all evening? Join Derek Ball for something very similar that happened to him at this year’s conference at Swansea.
Dynamic Number Line - Barry Orr
Barry Orr describes a clever use of a dynamic software package that brings the number line to life, and gives ready access to opportunities to generalise about multiplication.
Investigating Circles - Ruth Tanner
Ruth Tanner asks her Year 9 students to use Geometer’s Sketchpad to discover, and in some cases prove, some of the circle theorems.
Cabri 3D - Kate Mackrell
Many secondary teachers will be aware of the dynamic software package Cabri, but Cabri 3D may be new to you. Kate Mackrell gives a tour of some of the richly visual possibilities.
History Corner - Leo Rogers
Leo Rogers claims that all too often the history of mathematics is sidelined when topics are taught. Some topics are richer than others, of course, but similar triangles and unit fractions are discussed here to get you thinking.
Teacher at Work - Alf Coles
Many of you may have wanted to be a fly on the wall of a classroom teacher. There is much to see and much to learn. Here Alf Coles braves the camcorder – you will not be disappointed.
Conference 2009 - ATM
Conference this year was held at Swansea University: a compact campus overlooking the sea. There was a vast array of seminars, lectures and Extra Sessions to attend as well as work in the centrally placed workshop at the heart of it all. Naturally this was near to the bar and refectory. Here is a collection of responses from attendees to conference as well as a conversation between two regular visitors. These two conference elders - David and John, have ‘clocked up’ attendance at eighty – eight conferences in and around England.
Book Reviews - Margaret Jones, Dennis Pinshon, Craig Barton
Book reviews will never be the same! Mti offers a new experience, with exciting hyperlinks, and interviews with the authors. Read on.
Web Reviews - Douglas Butler
At last - A web review with live links! For this opening edition, Douglas Butler takes you on a tour through his TSM resources site, and offers up a few surprises.
Extras
Six (of course) interesting little resources and snippets to tantalise, inform and entertain.
