Professional Development
ATM Professional Development Courses provide the opportunity for participants to work collaboratively with other teachers on a range of mathematical activities suitable for the pupils they teach.
The activities will:
- be interactive and promote discussion
- where appropriate, use ICT and practical resources
- be flexible, so that they can be adapted to suit different ages and abilities of pupils
- promote understanding and exploration of significant mathematical ideas
- encourage a problem-solving approach that motivates the acquisition of knowledge and skills
- challenge pupils to think and reason mathematically
By working on the activities participants will be enabled to:
- see how they can be embedded into schemes of work
- embed ‘using and applying mathematics’ in their teaching
- develop their questioning techniques to assess and promote pupils’ learning

Master Classes
ATM Master Classes and workshops for pupils of any age offer a wide range of challenging yet accessible activities appropriate to the age and experience of the pupils. Most problems are chosen so that the mathematical knowledge and skills will be familiar but will nevertheless require of pupils the ability to explain ideas both systematically and creatively if they are to be solved. Other problems may be chosen to extend pupils' knowledge and understanding of some difficult mathematical ideas, such as infinity and irrational numbers.
Teachers who attend these events and work on the problems with pupils gain experience which can then be taken back to their own classrooms and can be shared with colleagues.
