Eight activities to help develop understanding of probability.

A pack containing practical hands-on activities, away from the usual dice and coin tossing experiments, that will help in developing an understanding of probability. The tasks were trialled very enthusiastically at a special session during the 2001 Easter Conference.

This pack contains activities that can be approached at many different levels, so that all learners, from primary children to sixth-formers, could benefit. The route to this diverse audience is the open nature of the tasks. This is reflected in some of the suggestions in the ‘Teachers Notes’, and we have every confidence that you will find your own mathematical routes and extensions once you get started on the tasks. An ‘unbreakable’ rule for each task is that there are NO wrong ways to play the games or vary the rules!

This pack is a photocopiable resource for use within the purchasing institution. This photocopiable pack includes:

Activities can be approached in many different ways and levels - primary to sixth form.

The inspiration for getting together the ideas for a probability pack came to Jill Russell and Kathryn Vaughan when they were working in the Publications Group of the ATM General Council.

An "unbreakable" rule for each task is that there are NO wrong ways to play the games or vary the rules!

Throughout the year the ideas were taken into a number of classrooms and the pupils' feedback was, as expected, valuable. Later in 2001 the General Council members tried out the ideas and helped us to select the most promising eight. Finally at the 2002 Easter Conference, these gained another level of lively testing and refinement (thank you!).

Although Kathryn and Jill have coordinated and facilitated the creation of this pack, it could never have happened without all the encouragement and enthusiastic help received ever since its conception. We hope you will enjoy this collection of activities.
