Multicultural mathematics - addressing historical and cross-cultural mathematics
Manjinder Jagdev from the University of East Anglia will present some themes based on ideas in her chapter in Mentoring Mathematics Teachers: Supporting and Inspiring Pre-Service and Newly Qualified Teachers.
Activities will include:
- Multiplication Tables in different languages: ...targeting Number
- Vedic Mathematics: ...targeting Geometry
- New Internationalist: ...targeting Statistics
Teachers and students work on these activities and discuss their use in classrooms at their placement schools.
There will be a collection of additional resources and materials including:
- Pupils' work
- Curriculum and Diversity (DfES publication)
- Africa Counts by Claudia Zaslavsky
- Multiple Factors - classroom mathematics for equality and justice, Sharanjeet Shan and Peter Bailey
- Ideas for classroom activities from PGCE Mathematics students.

Mike Ollerton will share some of his ideas for progression from Y7 to KS4.
Mike has been a teacher-educator for many years and a long-time member of ATM. He is a regular presenter at ATM conference and author of such books as Getting the Buggers to Add Up and Maths Without a Textbook as well as several ATM publications.
You are guaranteed a stimulating session with some great ideas to take back to you classroom.

Barbara and Derek Ball will work on one or two rich mathematical tasks which are designed to help learners use and extend their mathematical knowledge and understanding while working on engaging activities. The tasks are intended to develop confident and creative mathematicians who are willing to take risks, engage with others and take responsibility for their own learning.
Barbara is author of the ATM publications: Rich Task Maths 1 and 2.

Rich tasks: Algebra
We began with two short starter ideas which offered a number or algebra solution. A carousel of longer investigations / algebra problems included some practical Algebra games from the ATM publication, What kind of game is algebra? A brief update on the draft primary national curriculum included a couple of ideas for helping develop algebraic thinking with children in primary schools.
