‘The Mathemagician’
You will have the opportunity to take part in a workshop where you can:
- Develop expertise in presenting a range of ‘mathemagical’ activities to improve your students’ confidence in mathematics.
- Review activities that are designed to illustrate aspects of the curriculum, including “Problem-Solving"
- Share your experiences with other practitioners!
The activities are suitable for all students ranging from Year 1 through to Key Stage 4! You will be able to take your students on a “magical journey” that subtly changes their attitude to mathematics. You may wish to review the current newsletter and collect the free gifts. The session will be lead by Andrew Jeffrey.
Andrew is an independent mathematics consultant and formerly deputy head teacher at a school in the South of England. When he is not working as a consultant, he is a professional magician. He specialises in helping teachers and children alike grow in confidence through the use of multi-sensory and stimulating activities. He continues to enthuse and inspire students of all ages with his mathematical tricks. Andrew has established a reputation for enthusiastically delivering training to teachers in the UK and around the world to help them get to grips with making the most out of active learning strategies and in promoting an enjoyment of the subject.
The charge for each meeting is £5 for those in work and £2 for students.
Due to the popularity of previous events held at this venue you are strongly advised to book early.

A session on Autograph led by Alan Catley.
The power of ICT in the classroom will be shared with you during this session. You may wish to review some of the freely available activities, by clicking on the link, and download a trial version of Autograph to use during the meeting.
You are strongly advised to bring your laptop.
Alan Catley
Alan has 30 years experience of teaching Maths, first in a High School and more recently in a Sixth Form College in the North East of England. He continues to develop efficient strategies to enhance the subject at all levels. In recent years he has established a reputation for enthusiastically delivering training to teachers in the UK and around the world to help them to get to grips with making the most out of technology in the teaching and learning of Mathematics.

Sat 5 Mar 2011 • 09:30-12:15
Please note the date has changed from 12 Mar to 05 Mar 2011.
Using origami in the mathematics classroom can help to foster problem solving and creativity. During this workshop the presenters will share ways of using origami to support the development of mathematical understanding through practical, cooperative activity. The mathematics will range from geometry (which you might expect) to fractions (which you might not expect) and proof. The workshop will be suitable for teachers of mathematics at primary, secondary and beyond. The sessions will be lead by Sue Pope and Tung Ken Lam.
Sue Pope: will be joining the Faculty of Education at Liverpool Hope University in February 2011. She has spoken at various events and coordinated policy with respect to mathematics teaching. Click on Sue’s ‘Talking Heads’ monologue where she shares her experiences on ‘taking risks in the classroom’.
Tung Ken Lam: is a classic ‘shy retiring’ type of creator, who comes up with beautiful and elegant designs, often geometric in nature. He doesn’t ‘push’ his work, you just have to be there when he unveils it! Before you come to the session you may wish to look at some of his work (presented by the British Origami Society) or view the video for designing the Cuboctohedron!
Data Handling using ICT
Sat 06 Nov 2010 • 09:30-12:15
We will be using the excellent ICT facilities at this Mathematics and Computing College for our meeting on data handling. The sessions will be led by Kate Richards and Douglas Butler.
Kate Richards: Coordinator of the 2011 school based National Census Project, works with the ‘Census at School’ team and will be sharing practice on how the Census data can be used to support pupils’ learning of data handling in a practical way. Kate will also be coordinating the special school-based project running in 2011 (coinciding with the National Census) so this is a fantastic opportunity to get an early insight into the work.
Kate Richards’ presentation is available here
More information on Census at School resources...
Douglas Butler: Author of ‘Using the Internet - Mathematics’, principal author of the Autograph (mathematics software) package and director of the iCT Training Centre, based at Oundle School, Peterborough. Douglas will be sharing practice on how Autograph can be used in the classroom and by your pupils. Look out for tips and resources for managing the Census at School 2011 project.
More information on Douglas’s work...
If you want to make the most of the National Census next year, meet the speakers who will have a large input in the running of the school-based project and collect valuable resources then we look forward to seeing you.
A short AGM will take place at the beginning of the morning.
The charge for each meeting is £3.00 for those in work and £2.00 for students.

Grid Algebra
PLEASE NOTE: This session is now fully booked.
Dave Hewitt of the University of Birmingham, introduced this exciting new software from ATM.
Based on making journeys around a number grid and recognising number patterns, the creation and interpretation of algebraic expressions becomes intuitive.
Learners link to what they already know about movement on the grid.
We explored various number and algebra activities collectively with the software and saw how traditionally ‘difficult’ topics within algebra can now become relatively intuitive for students.
Read more about and even buy Grid Algebra here.
There was also a chance to try out the software and discuss it in small groups.
