Forthcoming meetings

Wed 01 Feb 2012

There are a number of topical items to get our teeth into this month, with the Intermediate Maths Challenge coming up this week and with Ofsted’s focus on raising aspirations and challenge we can take a look at some activities that we have used which allow differentiation and challenge whilst still being manageable in our busy classrooms.

Are individual activities for students practical in a secondary classroom (remember the schemes set up in the 80s/90s eg SMP where a programme (grid/matrix) was created by the teacher and students went to the filing cabinet to get the appropriate sheet/card, completed the activity and then passed it back to the teacher for marking and entering on a tracking sheet?) or is there a way around this applicable for the modern demands of the teacher?

Let’s see what we can come up with in our usual relaxed manner!

STEM Club 2008 with James Blowey, Durham University

This session reports on a STEM Club I ran in my daughter Primary School in 2008. It is an eclectic mix of topics where mathematics impinges on many subjects. I will be bringing along a range of toys which includes a large selection of twisty puzzle. Finally, each participant will get a free magic cube - now what more can you ask for!

Wed 03 Feb 2010

Due to adverse weather warnings and illness this meeting has been re-scheduled for 03 Mar 2010

Christmas Activities and Origami.

It’s getting a little colder and Christmas Decorations are going up all over the place. Time to get some planning in for Christmas in our maths departments

Well, its actually time to dust off the cobwebs from some old favourites. Liz Meenan, fabulous friend of the ATM, Maths Fair and moi, Maths Consultant and ex Channel 4 has given me some more inspiration and alongside some favourites we will be having a bit of fun. Maybe a quiz for Christmas? Maybe a game or two? Who knows unless you come along to find out!

If you have an idea, bring it along, the more the merrier. Ho Ho Ho!
