The Maths of Celtic and African Knots
With Professor Chris Budd - University of Bath
Chris will show us how Celtic and African knots are constructed and some of the mathematics behind them. There will be plenty of opportunity to practice creating out own and ideas to take back to the classroom.

Joint IMA/ATM maths trail creation.
We will meet with Dr Maths Steve Humble at 6pm in the square in front of Bath abbey and the pump rooms to create a maths trail around the city which will be used as part of the Bath Taps into science week.
This event is jointly organised by IMA and ATM.
Primary and secondary teachers and students all welcome. ATM membership is not required.
For further information or to book a place, please contact: Jayne Stansfield, School of Education, Bath Spa University j.stansfield@bathspa.ac.uk or telephone 01225 876556.

Engaging learners to think mathematically with Charlie Gilderdale - NRICH
The NRICH website initially published problems targeted at highly achieving maths students. Recently we have tried to cater for a much wider range of students by creating ‘low threshold - high ceiling’ tasks. This session will offer teachers the opportunity to work on some of these tasks, and to see how such activities allow all students to engage with key mathematical processes, regardless of their prior level of achievement.
Primary and secondary teachers and students all welcome. ATM membership is not required.
Cost: £1 for refreshments and immediate expenses.
Venue: Room CVG01, Culverhay Campus, Bath Spa University, Rush Hill, Bath, BA2 2QL - between the school and the surgery.
For further information please contact: Jayne Stansfield, School of Education, Bath Spa Universityor telephone: 01225 876556.

Where is the ‘real’ mathematics? • Pete Griffin, NCETM
‘Mathematicians are forced to resort to written symbols and pictures to describe their world - even to each other. But the symbols are no more that world than musical notation is music’ • Ian Stewart in Nature’s Numbers.
Symbols are often the source of great confusion for children learning mathematics. When they work in ‘real’ situations, they can often show considerable mathematical talent, but when symbols are introduced it can become incomprehensible...
...and yet being able to understand and use symbols fluently is often thought of as the goal in mathematics education.
In this session Pete will use the example of fractions and, in particular, a CPD session from the Primary on-line CPD module on the NCETM portal to debate and explore this issue. Although the session is taken from the primary CPD module it is equally applicable at secondary level.

Mobile Maths Workshop
This workshop is based around the final project of a Maths Enhancement student from last year which was inspired by the art of Alexander Calder and explores the mathematics of balance.
In this workshop we will use these ideas to make a Calder style mobile and show how the maths can be adapted for use in classrooms at a range of levels throughout primary and secondary.

Origami in the maths classroom
Many children have difficulty visualising and working with properties of shapes. By exploring how to create regular polygons and 3D models such as dodecahedra and bucky balls, Karen Wintle will demonstrate how a ‘hands on’ origami approach can be used in the classroom to help overcome this.
There is so much more to the art of origami than flapping birds and pretty flowers!
Primary and secondary teachers and students all welcome. ATM membership is not required.
Cost: £1 for refreshments and immediate expenses.
